AAS's Advice for Safe Solar-Eclipse Viewing

The Lowcountry Stargazers will be at two different locations around Charleston for the August 21st eclipse. We will have telescopes set up at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant, and Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner. The eclipse begins at 1:16pm and ends at 4:09pm, with maximum eclipse around 2:45pm.

Palmetto Islands County Park is located at 444 Needlerush Parkway, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. The park opens at 8am and there is a $2 admission fee. Our members will be there early, and plan to do some solar observing before the eclipse. Total eclipse will last 2m6s at this location. Click here for the Facebook event.

Old Santee Canal Park is located at 900 Stoney Landing Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461. The park opens at 9am and admission is free all day. The first 1,000 visitors through the gate will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses. Our members will be there early, and plan to do some solar observing before the eclipse. Total eclipse will last 2m34s at this location. Click here for the Facebook event.

Food Trucks! We will have Music Man BBQ, Carribean Creole, and Chillin' Station Shaved Ice. There will also be live music. The Charleston Hot Shots will be playing under the history Stoney Landing Plantation House.

Traffic is expected to be heavy, and it is recommended that wherever you plan to view the eclipse, you should get there early.

The Charleston Visitor's Center has a list of local eclipse events on their website.

This map has additional eclipse viewing locations staffed by astronomers from the College of Charleston and the Charleston Astronomy Meetup Group.
